Chinese speaking customers can join United States based nature and travel photographer David C. Schultz for a workshop he will be running with us in Guilin in May 2014.

David was recently selected as Nikon Ambassador to Asia and has appeared in TV advertisements, magazines, billboards and online campaigns in China, Hong Kong and other eastern markets. David's workshops and private lessons are very popular and he is sought after for his very personal approach to helping photographers of all skill levels improve their work technically as well as conceptually. He will help you understand composition, how to "work the subject" to get the best photographs and demonstrate how different lighting and weather conditions can have a dramatic influence on your images. Story telling with your collection of photographs will also be covered along with post-processing skills. This will include basic Photoshop and Lightroom editing techniques.

I've split this post into a few parts, today I want to share my favorite all round location and the best location for nightime landscape photographers in Guilin.

If you are in Guilin city on a tour, a holiday or business and photography is your thing, I suggest in the evening walking down the walking street towards the Waterfall Hotel, behind those trees from 8pm to 10pm you'll find lots of tour boats on the lake. 

Most of the boats have lights, some vivid neon, perfect for playing with long exposures and effects. This location is free and within easy walking distance from most hotels.

Here are a couple of photographs I took that evening this week:

In this location there is a problem to get high enough to keep the boat lights over the water, compounded by the fact that I only had my nifty fifty with me. If only those white boat roof LED's could be turned off. That said, I still kinda like the effect, to me it sums up the approach of Chinese tour companies, fast fast fast! 

These are true images with zero photoshop. The colors of the neon lights on this one particular boat are vivid, and the pagodas are illuminated brightly until 10 to 10.30 each night. The switch off time seems to be varied, it was 10.20 this particular night.
